Why Should You Try Acupuncture During Pregnancy?

2 min read

Over the last several years acupuncture has been shown to be an effective tool for promoting fertility and aiding IVF success and has become a staple part of fertility and conception support for many. But did you know that there are also many studies that support the use of acupuncture in the treatment of many common pregnancy symptoms as well? It’s true!

In fact, there is a long tradition of using acupuncture to treat common issues and pregnancy discomfort. The study and treatment of gynaecology, obstetrics and postpartum care is called Fuke and has been an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. Using acupuncture to ensure the optimal health of the parent-to-be from conception to labour was critical to ensure the health of the next generation.

Today we still use acupuncture in the treatment of pregnancy-related symptoms occurring across all three trimesters, and the postpartum period as well.

Common pregnancy issues treated by acupuncture

  • Anxiety

  • Fatigue

Second Trimester

  • Insomnia

  • Back pain

  • Carpal Tunnel syndrome

Acupuncturists trained in pregnancy care take special precautions when treating someone who is pregnant, such as avoiding certain acupuncture points, positioning the body for maximum comfort during treatment, asking specific questions and creating treatment plans that are tailored to the special concerns of someone who is pregnant. When these precautions are observed, acupuncture is an excellent, and safe addition to other types of obstetric care.
