Mood Boosters for a Better Blue Monday
The third Monday of January – better known as “Blue Monday” – is said to be the most depressing day of the year. Why is that? Well, the combination of cold weather, post-holiday blues, and a lack of motivation can quickly affect our mood and make it difficult to stay positive. But don't despair! There are lots of simple yet effective ways you can instantly boost your mood on this dreaded day {or any other day you need a pick-me-up!}. wellbe’s social worker + psychotherapist Marissa is here to help you with some instant mood boosters that will help bring some happiness into your life today.
Instant mood boosters that will turn your day around
Get outside.
It's a little bit cold out there, but studies have shown going for a walk outside lowers stress levels and increases positivity. Try to get as much fresh air {and sunshine when it peeks out!} as possible. (ps. our wellbe beanies are perfect for keeping cozy while you stroll!)
Be grateful.
Take some time to write down who and/or what you are grateful for. Keeping track of people or things that you are grateful for has been linked to increased feelings of happiness.
Add some Vitamin C to your diet.
Including Vitamin C in your daily routine helps to create neurotransmitters that regulate mood and combat depression. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of Vitamin C - try adding more things like citrus fruits (ie. oranges, lemon, grapefruit), bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, and broccoli into your meal plans!
Cultivate eudaimonic happiness.
This is gained by doing things that provide meaning and give a sense of striving to be one's best self (ie. volunteering, arts, spending time with loved ones, etc). Try to devote some time to self-improvement and self-care each day.
Watch or do something that makes you laugh.
Studies have shown that laughter increases dopamine which is a chemical that elevates mood. It also helps to reduce stress levels and leaves people feeling more relaxed and calm. Have you ever needed more of a reason to rewatch your fave shows? The Office is calling 😉
Blue Monday doesn't have to be so blue after all! We hope these tips help give you that extra boost of positivity and motivation during the time of year when things feel a little less bright. Try adding 1-2 of these mood boosters into your routine every day and get ready to feel the positivity!
