Welcome back to wellbe’s running series! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing some great tips and tricks to help you make the most of your running, whether you’re just getting started or you’re a seasoned vet. Check back next week for another great post and catch up on what you missed last week here.

When it comes to preventing injury, there a few simple things you can do. Keep these in mind so you can enjoy running season without the setbacks.

Our top tips for preventing running injuries

  • Wear appropriate footwear based on the type of running you are doing. For running on roads and sidewalks, you’ll want footwear that is supportive but still flexible. It’s also important to replace your shoes every 550 miles or so, depending on their state.

  • Run on even ground whenever possible.  Running on uneven ground will often alter your running gait (for example running on the road next to a sidewalk means the leg closest to the sidewalk will have further to go before it hits the ground).

  • It’s so important to incorporate muscle activation exercises, mobility exercises, and stretching as part of your pre-run routine. Make sure you also follow through with them post-run!

  • The final and most important tip when it comes to preventing injury is to listen to your body – if you’re starting to feel some pain or discomfort while running do not push through it. Stop and give your body some care instead of ignoring the problem before it gets too bad.
