4 Tips to Help Foster a Healthy Body Image in the Summer

3 min read

Maintaining a healthy body image can be challenging, particularly in the warmer months. Societal pressures to conform to beauty standards can be heightened this season, leading to changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that can steal some of the fun to be had during our short Canadian summer!

Below are 4 tips to help you foster a positive body image and promote self-love while the temperatures soar:

Focus on Health, Not Weight:

Instead of fixating on the number on the scale or the size of your clothes, focus on nourishing your body with wholesome foods and enjoying time outdoors. Remember that health is about more than just physical appearance; it incorporates mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Practice Self-Compassion:

Be kind to yourself and practice self-love. Focus on qualities you love about yourself that have nothing to do with your body. Challenge negative self-talk and replace it with positive affirmations about your worth. Remember: you are more than your body.

Limit Exposure to Negative Influences:

You know the old saying, “Comparison is the thief of joy”? Social media can take that to a whole new level. In our screen-focused world, social media can be a breeding ground for comparison and unrealistic beauty standards. Consider taking breaks from social media or unfollowing accounts that promote negative body image and source positive and uplifting content instead. Bonus tip: Surround yourself with humans who are also positive and uplifting!

Focus on Fun and Enjoyment:

Summer is a time for relaxation and enjoyment. Shift your focus from your body to the experiences and moments that bring you joy. Engage in activities that make you happy, whether it's swimming, hiking, picnicking, meeting friends at a park, or simply basking in the sun (with SPF, of course!)

As summer invites us to shed layers and embrace the sun, it's so important to maintain a positive body image and prioritize self-love. By following these tips, you can foster a healthy and positive outlook on your body. Remember, summer is about enjoying life's simple pleasures and cherishing moments of joy and connection. If negative body image impacts your mental health, seeking support from a therapist can be a valuable step - they can provide tools to challenge negative thought patterns and build a healthier relationship with your body. Embrace your uniqueness and let your confidence shine through all season long!
