Face Mask Hacks: Tips for Helping Your Kids Wear Masks!
As the year 2020 continues and our new normal settles in, both grown-ups and kiddos are learning to adapt to the new ways to keep one another safe. Along with regular handwashing, sanitization, and avoiding touching - mask wearing is a biggie for our littles.
Learning to wear a mask for an extended period of time takes some getting used to and may be a bit scary for your little one.
Here are a few parent-tested hacks to help make wearing a mask for comfy.
“But, why?”
You’ve heard this before a gazillion times! Most little people want to know the “why?” and being told they have to wear a mask is no different. It’s a new thing for kids and as grown-ups, it’s important to help them understand why we’re all wearing a mask and what role it plays to keep everyone safe.
And while the explanation seems simple enough - “my mask protects you, and your mask protects me” - it still may be scary for children. Validating their concerns or any fears they have about wearing a mask is important so they can process their feelings and feel more in control of the situation.
Dinosaurs or Rainbows?
Let your kiddos choose which masks they will wear. From selecting colours or fabrics to decorating their face masks with stickers or markers, allow them to get creative with the mask which will help them feel like they have more control and become more at ease.

Practice makes perfect. Use a doll or stuffy, to help practice wearing a mask.Having a masked stuffy tea party makes practice perfect! Start with shorter periods of time while doing fun (distracting) activities. Gradually work up to 30 minutes. For toddlers, you can also play a game of peek a boo to show your kiddo that you are the same person with or without a mask.
Be a Mask Model
Remembering to wear your own mask and being a mask role model gives your kiddo the reassurance they need. Wear your mask, and explain how it keeps both you and others safe.
Be Patient
Last but not least, remember wearing a mask is a big adjustment. Allow your kiddo time to play while wearing a mask so they can get used to it. Consistency helps form good habits, stick to your plan and above all, don’t give up!
