We're beyond excited to introduce you to the newest addition to our chiropractic dream team, the incredible Dr. Jordana Garraway! Ready to get to know her better? We got the inside scoop on what makes her tick, her passions, and why she's so darn passionate about chiropractic care.
Let's dive in!
1. What led you to become a chiropractor?
I became a chiropractor because I wanted to address health concerns outside of traditional Western medicine and help vulnerable populations become more informed about their health. Growing up in a West Indian household, the trust between medical professionals and the West Indian community has been blurred due to many historical events. In fact, when I first got accepted to Chiropractic school, few in my family had been to a chiropractor before, or even knew what Chiropractic was! Over the years, I've found that not only my family, but my surrounding West Indian community had lost trust in the healthcare system and subsequently had become less informed on their personal health. I wanted to be able to step into the healthcare field, prepped and ready with information and tools to be able to give back to not only my community but other vulnerable populations and unblur the line of trust.
2. What is your passion?
I have a strong passion for community. I find that people have difficulty leaning on others when it comes to looking for help, advice, or even just an open ear. I've once fallen into the trap of being labelled as a "strong woman", and thinking I couldn't admit that I was struggling, or ask for help from my loved ones or healthcare providers. I want to be able to break these notions and allow people to recognize that strong does not equal silence. You can be strong and cry, strong and reach out, strong and feel stuck. This is why I love community and why I love to get to know my patients on a personal level, letting them know it is okay to ask for help and providing the appropriate resources for their scenario. It truly does take a village, not only to raise a child but to maintain wellness as an adult!
3. What do you love to do during a treatment? Your fave move? Your fave thing to treat?
I love a good suboccipital release! A lot of people tend to hold their daily life stresses in the neck, specifically the suboccipitals. Unfortunately, when there is additional tension in the neck, it can lead to headaches, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. When I address this area, I find that patients are walking away not only with less tension, but they are happier and more optimistic about their day.
4. WHo is your fave patient?
My favourite patient is the patient who believed they couldn't, but with patience and consistency in and out of the clinic, they have achieved their goals and more. The population I have the most experience working with are low-income, blue-collar workers who feel life has handed them a bad hand. It is my absolute favourite thing ever to see the spark and light re-enter them as they discover how to take care of themselves, not only physically but mentally. Nothing makes me happier to be a helping hand in their journey of wellness.
5. What was your passion in school?
In school, I had a huge passion for radiology and diagnostic imaging! This was a course that I would always look forward to, no matter how difficult it may have gotten. I'd like to believe the reason why is because it's super fascinating to see something that is currently happening within all of us, but we are unable to see it with the naked eye. I also found that with a better knowledge of diagnostic imaging, providing education to my patients became easier because I was kind of able to picture what was going on! Strange passion I know, but I loved that course haha.
