ABOUT THIS SUPPORT GROUP
A Relationally Focused Program for Postpartum Mental Health
Becoming a new mother can be both joyous and extremely challenging at times. In addition to navigating the needs of your child(ren) and coping with the hormonal changes that accompany new motherhood, the psychological health of new parents often suffers during this stage of the family life cycle. Symptoms of depression, anxiety and general overwhelm are all too common and can feel isolating during this vulnerable time.
Using both clinically informed interventions and knowledge gained from practice, our group provides new parents a safe space to share their thoughts, emotions and experiences and creates opportunities to experience improved mental wellness.
Over 6 sessions, join wellbe’s Social Worker, Shannon Deacon, as she facilitates discussion around the following themes in a safe and supportive setting:
Processing Stories: the experiences of infertility, miscarriages & birth trauma
A Mother’s New Identity: Self Care & Adjustment
Relational & Family Dynamics: Communication & Coping Strategies
Mood: Postpartum Depression & Anxiety
Parenting Strategies from the Newborn Stage and Beyond
The group aims to:
Decrease levels of depression and anxiety, increase self-esteem and adjustment to parenting
Decrease social and emotional isolation
Improve marital and familial relationships
Provide a group setting that creates open, safe and inclusive space for individuals to share their experiences
Develop strategies to strengthen skills at a time when feelings of isolation are heightened
Dismantle and normalize the real experience of motherhood
Participants are welcome to attend sessions with or without their infant.
