EMDR: Debunking the Myths (Part 2)

So now that you have a little understanding of what EMDR is (check out our last blog post), let’s look at debunking some common myths…

Myth 1.  EMDR is hypnosis.

Nope! Don’t let the ‘eye-movement’ part fool you. You are fully awake and present during a treatment, in the safe presence of your therapist. You also have full control, and are able to stop the process whenever you feel you need.

Myth 2. EMDR is supernatural, or ‘woo-woo’.

Quite the opposite. EMDR has been rigorously researched, is evidence based and is supported by the World Health Organization as a highly effective treatment.

Myth 3. EMDR is just for trauma.

While originally used for PTSD, it has also been shown to be effective for a wide range of mental health issues from anxiety, depression, phobias, self-esteem, attachment issues, as well as fertility and peripartum or birth trauma. Feel free to chat with me to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Myth 4. EMDR is a quick-fix.

Nope. While it is highly effective, it is not intended to be a ‘quick-fix’, contrary to any recent fashion magazine articles you may have seen touting this idea. The amount of sessions needed would be dependent on your situation and would be discussed with your therapist. Time would also be spent developing resources for self-care and grounding throughout your treatment.
