manual magic that will make your little one feel like a superhero

From the moment they are born, children’s bodies go through a lot. Maybe it’s trauma from a difficult delivery, head or tailbone injuries from a fall from the monkey bars, or growing pains and discomfort from their constantly-changing bodies. Osteopathy can help all of the above and more.

This gentle, hands-on approach uses various techniques to bring balance and equilibrium to your little one’s body. Rather than focus on a specific pain point, osteopathy looks at the whole body to provide overall good health and well-being. We especially love osteopathy for babies and children because it encourages self-healing and self-regulation, empowering your little one to feel like their very own superhero.

Our osteopaths use a personalized mix of approaches (ie. cranial, visceral, musculoskeletal, lymphatic, vascular, etc.) and works with fascias (the connected tissue in your body that holds us together!) to find restrictions and reestablish mobility. Techniques include osteo-articular mobilizations, myofascial release, visceral manipulation, cranial sacral therapy, intra-oral osteopathic techniques.

Pediatric Osteopathy is just like the treatment for grown ups but adapted to tiny humans’ anatomy!

Birth is quite the adventure for both mama and baby, a check up at the osteopath can always be a good idea to prevent any restrictions in the body. Osteopathy can be helpful for other reasons including and not limited to: acid reflux, collics, plagiocephaly (flat head), troubles sleeping, torticollis, dragging a leg when crawling, difficulty latching.

Plagiocephaly (flat head) and torticolis.

During the first appointment, a big portion will be spent talking about the chief complaint (aka what hurts!) and some general health questions covering things such as trauma and medical history as well as other day-to-day things like your child's digestion. All of this is super important because we get to know your child top to bottom – not just their pain! The session continues with a body scan where we find the areas that need some TLC in regards to what we discussed. Once we agree on a plan, your child will get hands-on treatment for the reminder of the session. Follow-ups include a quick check-in at the beginning and hands-on manual therapy for the rest of the session!

Osteopathy is a very gentle approach! We find that children don’t feel much during the session but the results are incredible! Some techniques or areas can be a bit more sensitive for your child depending on pain tolerance, but we’re always happy to adjust accordingly!

Everybody responds differently to manual therapy, but the classic feeling after an osteopathy session is “feeling a little loopy” or “lighter”.

The biggest difference is most Osteopaths don’t manipulate like chiropractors do and they include the visceral sphere (the fascias of your abdomen and around some of your organs) in their clinical thinking.

Absolutely! Every different modality of manual therapy comes together for a multidisciplinary approach. One person can’t do everything!

Cranial Osteopathy is one of the many approaches that can be included in your treatment. It can be super gentle (where the practitioner focuses on the rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid) or it can be a little more vigorous to work on the dynamic between different bones. Cranial bones are connected by sutures and have pivot points that should allow some pliability or capacity to adapt under pressure.
